Keyano College Huskies Athletics announced today that Women's Volleyball student athlete Erika Box (Saskatoon, Sask.) and Men's Basketball student athlete Jusci Thompson (Toronto, Ont.) have been named the Keyano Huskies Athletes of the Week for the week ending Sunday, March 6, 2022.

Both student athletes played key role in playoff victories for the Huskies during the weekend.

With the Women's Volleyball Huskies, Box compiled 55 assists, 10 digs, one ace, and one block across a pair of games for her side. The Women's Volleyball Huskies opened their weekend with a four-set victory (23-25, 28-26, 25-16, 26-24) at home Friday against the Concordia Thunder in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Playoffs before falling in straight sets (15-25, 13-25, 18-25) Sunday to the Lakeland Rustlers.

In Friday's four-set win at home, Box recorded 39 assists, one ace, seven digs, and one block as the Huskies took down the Thunder. Sunday, she had 16 assists and three digs in the season-ending loss for the Huskies.

Box enjoyed a productive rookie season with the Women's Volleyball Huskies, recording 335 assists, 66 digs, 17 aces, and 15 kills while playing in 51 of the team's 65 sets throughout the regular season.

Since the ACAC began recording assists as part of their statistical recordkeeping in the 2014-15 season, Box is the fourth student-athlete from the Women's Volleyball Huskies to record 300 or more assists in a single season, joining Alexa Ellis, Reagan Toth, and MacKenzie Stokes.

Box, a product of Saskatoon, Sask. Is currently enrolled in Keyano College's Business program.

Thompson played a key offensive role for the Keyano Huskies Men's Basketball team Sunday in their 125-54 victory against the visiting Northwest Polytechnic Wolves in the second round of ACAC Men's Basketball Playoffs.

Thompson recorded 20 points, four rebounds, four assists, and three steals in 22 minutes of action for the Huskies.

"He always stays ready coming off the bench and I thought, especially on Sunday, what he did defensively really got his offence going and he got others involved," Head Coach Jeremy Wielenga said. "He provided us a great spark and he's going to be a big piece for us going forward this weekend."

Thompson shot five-for-12 from the field, including making a pair of three-point shots. He also forced his way to the foul line nine times, making eight buckets. Of his 20 points in the game, second only to teammate Sean Michael-Clancey, Thompson drilled 13 of them in the fourth quarter as the Huskies put the finishing touches on the victory.

In his second year of eligibility, Thompson is currently enrolled at Keyano College in their Early Learning and Child Care Diploma program.

During the 2021-22 ACAC Regular Season, Thompson appeared in 15 games, averaging 7.1 points per game along with 1.9 assists, 1.3 rebounds, and 1.0 steals per game. His 2.8 assist-to-turnover ratio was tied for the fourth-best in the entire conference.

He was also one of seven Huskies to surpass 100 points scored this season, totalling 107. He finished the season 38-for-83 from the field (45.8 per cent), including 10 three-point shots on 30 attempts (33.3 per cent). He also made 21-of-29 free throws (72.4 per cent).

The Huskies will now roll along to Calgary to play for a medal in the ACAC's Final Four. They'll take on the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings on Friday, March 11 at 5:00 p.m.
