Keyano College Huskies Athletics announced today that women's soccer student athlete Marissa Mestre (Hamilton, Ont.) and men’s soccer student athlete Tharman Rajakathirvel (Ile Perrot, Que.) have been named the Keyano Huskies Athletes of the Week for the week ending Sunday, October 10, 2021.

The first-year full-back played a key role in the continuation of the women’s soccer Huskies strong regular season. She was named the Player of the Game in Saturday’s 3-1 win against the visiting Lakeland Rustlers.

The triumph extended the team’s winning streak to four games and temporarily put them at the top of the table in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) North Division.

“She had a great weekend and showed very dominant play in both games,” said head coach Niels Slotboom. “She was solid defensively and created several offensive chances throughout both games.”

Mestre and the Huskies closed out their regular season schedule with a 3-1 loss to the NAIT Ooks Sunday in Edmonton.

The Nursing student was one of eight Huskies to start all six games this season and compiled seven shots on goal throughout the course of the season.

The women’s soccer Huskies will play host to The King’s University Eagles this coming weekend in the first round of ACAC Women’s Soccer Playoffs.

Rajakathirvel, a first-year central midfielder, had a solid weekend as the men’s soccer Huskies as they closed out their regular season with a 4-2 loss to the Lakeland Rustlers and a 1-1 draw with the nationally-ranked NAIT Ooks. He was named the Player of the Game in Sunday’s draw.

“Tharman shut down the Ooks attack on Sunday, while creating some great plays moving forward,” said Slotboom.

Rajakathirvel picked up an assist on the Huskies’ lone goal Sunday in Edmonton, sending a perfect volley to the front of the net for teammate Ayman Hassen to bump in.

The College Preparation student was one of five Huskies to start all six games this season. He had a single assist and three shots throughout the course of the season.

The men’s soccer Huskies will return to Edmonton to take on The King’s University Eagles this coming weekend in the first round of ACAC Men’s Soccer Playoffs.
