Keyano College Huskies Athletics announced today that women's volleyball student athlete Raisa Stokes (Fort McMurray, Alta.) and men's volleyball student athlete Athus Silva (Campinas, Brazil) have been named the Keyano Huskies Athletes of the Week for the week ending Sunday, November 21, 2021.

Stokes contributed 16 digs across the pair of games as the Huskies fell to the Lakeland Rustlers twice.

"She led very well on the court," said head coach Kira Sutcliffe. "I think she thought her gameplay wasn't the greatest on Friday, but she turned around and really stepped it up Saturday, which was nice to see.

"There's a reason why she's leading the conference in digs. She's just a defensive machine out there. It's nice to see a third year/fourth year step up a little bit more when we needed it."

Stokes had seven digs in Friday's three-set loss to the Rustlers. Saturday, she had nine digs in the four-set match.

In four games this season, Stokes has already recorded 70 digs, which leads the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC). She also ranks third in digs per set at 4.38.

The Education student joined the Huskies for the 2018-19 academic year and has been a key defensive piece of the team's roster since. In 49 ACAC regular season matches, she's compiled 589 digs and added 87 assists.

Silva had a powerful offensive weekend on the home court with the men's volleyball Huskies against the Lakeland Rustlers. Across the pair of wins, he tallied 17 kills, three service aces, and five solo blocks.

"He had a solid weekend all aspects of the game in the middle position," said men's volleyball head coach Keegan Kuhr. "I'm happy for him because I know he has been working hard on his game."

In Friday's five-set victory, Silva collected nine kills, three services aces and one solo block. Saturday, he added eight kills and four blocks. His eighth kill of the match came down emphatically as he ended a close fourth set between the two sides.

This season, Silva has appeared in all four games for the Huskies, recording 29 kills, four service aces, eight digs, and 16 blocks. His 1.61 kills per set ranks fifth on the Huskies.

An Open Studies student in his second year of eligibility, Silva first joined the Huskies for the 2019-20 ACAC season. In 24 career ACAC games, Silva has 128 kills, four assists, 18 service aces, 40 digs, and 92 blocks.

Both volleyball Huskies teams will take to the road this weekend when they travel to face the Grande Prairie Regional College Wolves. The women will play at 6:00 p.m. Friday and 1:00 p.m. Saturday with the men following at 8:00 p.m. Friday and 3:00 p.m. Saturday.
