Keyano College Huskies Athletics announced today that Women's Volleyball student athlete Jamie Ferns (Fort McMurray, Alta.) and Men's Basketball student athlete Jacob Simmons (Fort McMurray, Alta.) have been named the Keyano Huskies Athletes of the Week for the week ending Sunday, January 30, 2022.

Ferns and Simmons each played key roles in delivering weekend sweeps to their respective sides. In Edmonton, Ferns was a part of a three-game weekend sweep for the Women's Volleyball Huskies against the NAIT Ooks. At home, Simmons paced the Huskies' offence to a pair of wins against the visiting Ooks.

Through the three weekend wins, Ferns started each game, totalling 24 kills, seven digs, and three aces.

"She was great this weekend," Head Coach Kira Sutcliffe said. "The Friday against Augustana was her first starting game. I think she's done a really good job getting that opportunity.

"She just took that opportunity and she's been rolling with it and working really hard."

In Friday's four-set win against the Ooks, Ferns matched a season-high with 13 kills. She'd follow that up with six kills in Saturday's four-set win and five more in Sunday's straight-sets victory.

Ferns' 2021-22 season has featured 51 kills, 25 digs, four aces, and two assists in 13 games. For her Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference career, the Nursing student in her fourth year of eligibility has recorded 312 kills, 317 digs, 36 aces, and 14 assists.

Simmons helped pace the Men's Basketball Huskies to a pair of home wins against the Ooks, compiling 19 points, 21 assists, four rebounds, and one steal in 59 minutes of action across the two games.

"Jacob is a huge part of our program and does everything that you can ask for someone on the floor and off the floor," Head Coach Jeremy Wielenga said. "He was incredible; one of the two best playmaking games I've seen him have.

"He was scoring and he was contributing and that's probably one of the best play-making weekends I've seen him play since he's been here."

In Saturday's 87-80 win, Simmons posted nine points, 10 assists, and three rebounds in the win. Sunday, he collected his first double-double of the season, with 10 points and 11 assists to go along with one rebound and one steal.

The Business student is in his fifth year of eligibility and is averaging 8.7 points per game to go along with 4.8 assists, 2.8 rebounds, and 0.9 steals per game.

The Men's Basketball Huskies are on the road in Edmonton on Sunday, February 6 at 3:00 p.m., facing the Concordia Thunder.

The Women's Volleyball Huskies return to action at home on Friday, February 11 at 6:00 p.m. when they play host to the University of Alberta – Augustana Vikings at the Syncrude Sport and Wellness Centre.
