Besic, Carefoote-Jones named Keyano Huskies Athletes of the Week

Keyano College Huskies Athletics announced today that Women's Basketball student-athlete Maja Besic (Pancevo, Serbia) and Men's Basketball student-athlete Nathan Carefoote-Jones (Calgary, Alta.) have been named the Keyano Huskies Athletes of the Week for the week ending Sunday, December 4, 2022.
 
The pair each played strong roles in their respective teams performances against The King's University Eagles with the Men's Basketball Huskies earning a weekend sweep and the Women's Basketball Huskies playing to a weekend split.

Maja Besic, Women's Basketball

Across the two weekend games, Besic recorded 31 points, 20 rebounds, five assists, five steals, and four blocks in 67 minutes of gasmetime.  

In Friday's 61-55 victory, she posted a career-high 26 points, adding 11 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season. She also added three assists, two steals, and two blocks. Her impact was felt in the opening quarter as she scored 12 of her points in the opening frame, nearly equalling the 13 points scored by the opposition. With the game still in contention in the fourth quarter, she added her final 10 points as well as seven rebound to secure the win. For her performance, she earned Player of the Game honours.

Saturday, she added five points, nine rebounds, two assists, three steals, and two blocks in a 46-43 loss. 

Besic, who is in her third year of eligiblity and studying Business Administration, has stepped up with the Huskies this season. Her 132 total points rank second on the Huskies while her 86 rebounds lead the team, claiming the top spot in both the offensive and defensive categories. 

"She had a very good weekend," Head Coach Dwayne Vigilance said. "She's been battling back injuries for the last couple of weeks and Friday was a good sign of her being healthy and getting better but she played very well this weekend." 

Her 132 points rank 12th in the entire Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) while also ranking sixth in field goals made. Her 30 assists have her in a tie for ninth in the ACAC as well. 

Defensively, she is tied for sixth in defensive rebounds and is eighth overall in total rebounds. She's tied for 11th in offensive rebounds. 

The Huskies return to action in the second semester, hosting the Concordia Thunder on Friday, January 20 and Saturday, January 21. Friday's game tips off at 6:00 p.m. with Saturday's contest getting underway at 1:00 p.m. 

Nathan Carefoote-Jones, Men's Basketball

Across a pair of weekend wins, Carefoote-Jones posted 13 points, three rebounds, nine assists, and three steals in 28 minutes of action. 

Friday, he posted seven points, two rebounds, five assists, and two steals in a 93-55 win against the Eagles. Saturday, he contributed six points, one rebound, four assists, and one steal in a 103-68 win for the 12-0 Huskies. The two performances were his fourth and fifth times shooting 50 percent or better from the field. Saturday was his seventh game with at least 10 minutes played and zero turnovers. 

"He brings his energy and effort to our team and he's an important piece to what we do," Head Coach Jeremy Wielenga said. "Some of the things he does isn't always measured in the stat sheet. He's an integral part of us going forward and he had a great weekend for us." 

In his second year of eligibility and pursuing University Studies, Carefoote-Jones has embraced a larger role with the Huskies this year, recording 6.6 points, 1.8 rebounds, 1.3 assists, and 1.3 steals on a per game basis. Offensively, his impact has been felt the strongest from beyond the arc, with him knocking down 16 of 39 attempted three-point shots for a 41.0 percent figure that ranks 10th in the conference.
