Keyano College Huskies Athletics announced today that Women's Volleyball student-athlete Rebecca Maxwell and Men's Volleyball student-athlete João Cunha have been named the Keyano Huskies Athletes of the Week for the week ending February 5, 2023.

Both played strong roles for their club on the road this past weekend against The King's University Eagles.

Rebecca Maxwell, Women's Volleyball
Across a pair of games this weekend in Edmonton, Maxwell recorded 74 assists,17 digs, three blocks, and two kills.

"Rebecca consistently gave our offence opportunities to score this weekend," Head Coach Hayden Nichol said. "She averaged over 10 assists per set against in both matches this weekend against one of the hardest teams to score against in the league.

"She came up with a few timely blocks and digs when our team needed a spark as well."

The setter from Ottawa, Ont. has quickly become an indispensable part of the Huskies lineup, recording 480 assists, 128 digs, 58 kills, 30 blocks, and 22 aces during her first season of action in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC).

With three previous years of play at the U SPORTS level with the McMaster University Marauders, Maxwell has now recorded 1,009 assists, 428 digs, 197 kills, 77 aces, and 67 blocks.

She's also 34 assists shy of the single-season assists record of 514, set by Alexa Ellis in the 2014-15 academic year.

Maxwell and the Huskies host the Briercrest College Clippers on Friday with first serve at 6:00 p.m. followed by the team's final home game of the 2022-23 regular season Saturday against the Medicine Hat College Rattlers with the same start time as well.

João Cunha, Men's Volleyball
Across the two weekend matches for the Huskies, Cunha recorded 45 kills, 11 digs, four assists, three aces, and a pair of blocks.

"On the court, he was leading us," Head Coach Keegan Kuhr said. "He's calming us down, he was doing a lot of things I've been harping on him to do all year and it was nice to see him bring that out and support his teammates.

"He was a beast this weekend."

Cunha is excelling in his return to the ACAC, posting 192 kills, 84 digs, 20 aces, 14 assists, and 11 blocks across 52 sets in 13 games. That's given him 457 kills, 194 digs, 52 aces, 28 blocks, and 26 assists for his two seasons in the ACAC.

Including his statistics from the 2021-22 season with the Brandon University Bobcats of U SPORTS, the Rio de Janeiro, Brazil product has amassed 600 kills, 297 digs, 66 blocks, 66 aces, and 44 assists in his three seasons of post-secondary play.

Cunha and the Huskies host the Briercrest College Clippers on Friday with first serve schedule for 8:00 p.m. followed by the team's final home game of the 2022-23 regular season Saturday against the Medicine Hat College Rattlers with the same scheduled start time as well.
