During Black History Month, Keyano College Huskies Athletics will be celebrating and recognizing the accomplishments of Black student-athletes and staff who have made an impact during their time at Keyano College. Today, the program is recognizing Women’s Basketball student-athlete Moiyan Toure.

This weekend, the Keyano Huskies Women’s Basketball team honoured their graduating players with their annual senior night, but it was just last year that the team and program were able to say thanks to a legend of the program.

During her five-year career with the Huskies, Moiyan Toure because a leader in every sense of the word, leading her team on the score sheet nearly every night and also excelling as a rebounder at both ends of the court while posing as a threat to force a turnover with a well-executed steal.

The Edmonton, Alta. product began her career with the Huskies in the 2016-17 season, where she recorded 240 points while appearing in all 24 games. While she was third on the team in scoring as a rookie, she led the team with 211 rebounds, posting 100 on offence and 111 on defence, ranking second in the ACAC North and third overall in the conference.

She would also add 40 steals, 24 assists, and 16 blocks as part of an outstanding rookie campaign that put her on the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference’s (ACAC) First All-Conference Team.

The surging Huskies finished that season with a 15-9 record, good for third in the ACAC North Division. Though they’d fall in both their games at Women’s Basketball Championships that year, it set the foundation for the success of future years.

Appearing in 22 of her team’s 24 games in the 2017-18 campaign, Toure posted 198 points for a 9.0 points per game average. She also repeated her feat of leading the team in offensive (81), defensive (103), and total rebounds (184), placing second in rebounds for the ACAC North for a second-straight season.

Her season also included 32 steals, 25 assists, and three blocks. For the first time in program history, the Huskies and Toure ascended to the top of the ACAC’s North Division that season with an 18-6 record.

The 2018-19 season was Toure’s strongest from a scoring perspective as she posted 355 points and 325 rebounds in 24 games. She led the North Division in scoring and steals (63) and also led the conference in rebounds.

Returning to the ACAC’s North Division First All-Conference team, Toure and the Huskies went 16-8, finishing second in the ACAC North Division.

After their previous trips hadn’t worked out for them, the Huskies topped the Lethbridge College Kodiaks 75-57 in their quarter-final matchup and beat the Augustana Vikings 55-42 to advance to their first ACAC Championship game.

Earning the Silver Medal, a historic first for the program, they also booked their spot at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association’s (CCAA) Women’s Basketball Nationals, where the Huskies finished in the 5th/6th spot and Toure powered her way onto the second All-Tournament team.

In 2019-20, the Huskies secured their first 20-win season in the programs history of competition in the ACAC, going 20-4 and topping the North Division. Leading the Huskies to that top spot was Toure with 322 points and 333 rebounds, the only student-athlete in the entire conference to break the 300-point and 300-rebound thresholds during that season.

She also once again led the division in steals (65) and ranked strongly in her division for assists and blocks as well. As you might expect, she was another lock for the ACAC’s First All-Conference Team.
In the playoffs, the Huskies continued their momentum by defeating the Medicine Hat College Rattlers to set up a semi-final matchup against a St. Mary’s University Lightning team that had handed them opening-round losses in 2017 and 2018.

This time, Toure and the Huskies flipped the script with a 69-67 win to return to the Gold Medal game. Earning a second-straight Silver Medal, the Huskies clinched another berth at CCAA Women’s Basketball Nationals, though COVID-19 disrupted plans for the Huskies to challenge for the podium.

Following a cancelled season, Toure kept with the Huskies program, determined to close out her post-secondary career with another strong performance. She did just that, averaging 13.8 points per game and 10.4 rebounds per game over a 16-game shortened season, which put her on the ACAC’s All-Conference First Team for a fourth time.

Closing out her five years with 1,335 points, 1,220 rebounds, 243 steals, and 174 assists, Toure is not only one of the Huskies top student-athletes ever, but ranks well among the best-ever in ACAC Women’s Basketball.

She is the league’s all-time rebounder, ranks in the top 10 for all-time steals, and also places in the top 15 for all-time points.

Her strengths also extended to the classroom as she was named a CCAA Academic All-Canadian for the 2019-20 season and earned the CCAA’s National Scholar Award for the 2019-20 academic year as well.

One of the best to ever step onto the court in ACAC Basketball and through the doors at Keyano College, Toure truly changed the course of Keyano Huskies Women’s Basketball and Keyano Huskies Athletics for the better.
