The Keyano Huskies Women's Volleyball team earned a straight-sets victory (25-21, 25-15, 25-17) against the Northwest Polytechnic Wolves Saturday afternoon at the Syncrude Sport and Wellness Centre.

The win gave the Huskies a weekend sweep and a 2-0 start to the 2022-23 Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Women's Volleyball season.

"[There's] nothing wrong with being 2-0, but I think everyone in our team room knows that there's still another level to go," Head Coach Hayden Nichol said. "I feel like we played down a little bit today, but next week we have the biggest test of the first semester, and we're really excited for it.

"We need to train this coming week like we're ready for it."

Tyneille Neufeld had 10 kills while Rebecca Maxwell delivered 25 assists and 15 digs to earn Player of the Game honours. Playing her first competitive volleyball since before the COVID pandemic began, Maxwell saw a positive in her team finishing out the sets and preventing the Wolves from winning a set on either day.

"The biggest challenge was finding out what kind of a team we're going to be in gameplay," Maxwell said. "Practice versus a game can be very different in terms of how you interact with your teammates, how you view yourself in terms of confidence.

"I think we did a really good job, especially towards the end of the sets there; we didn't let them come back in."

Karlene Kaminski also reached double-digit digs, recording 11 in the match to go along with nine kills. Rookie Sofia Janzen led all players on both sides with three blocks.

Neufeld and teammate Raisa Stokes had nine and eight digs, respectively, to also contribute to the team's defensive efforts.

Nichol acknowledged the errors in early-season play, with 21 by the Wolves Saturday, disruptive to the momentum of the game for his side. In the same breath, he said he wouldn't turn down the free points either.

"NWP is a young team, and those errors are going to happen, and we had to be ready for that," he said.

The Huskies hit the road for two-straight weekends, starting with a trip to Lloydminster, Alta. to battle the Lakeland Rustlers, last year's ACAC Silver Medalists, in a pair of games this coming Friday at 6:00 p.m. and Saturday at 1:00 p.m.

The matches will be streamed through ACACTV.ca
