The Women’s Basketball Huskies will play for fifth place at the 2023 Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Women’s Basketball Championship in Lethbridge Saturday.

The Huskies extended their season by a game with a 71-49 victory against the Concordia Thunder, ending the season of the top-ranked team from the ACAC’s North Division.

“The girls showed lots of character in the bounce back after a tough loss Thursday,” said Head Coach Dwayne Vigilance. “They played really well together.”

After a 16-15 first quarter in favour of the Huskies, they took charge with a 19-11 second quarter to put them ahead by nine at the half. The Huskies then won the second half with a 22-16 third quarter in their favour and a 14-7 fourth.

The Huskies found a way to power through in the paint, making 26 of their 28 field goals from inside the arc. Overall, they shot 42.4 percent (28-for-66) from the field, making two of 11 attempted three-point shots.

Leading the offensive charge was Maja Besic, who had 21 points, including seven of her team’s first quarter effort.

“She took our loss very hard [Thursday],” continued Vigilance. “She played for her teammates and showed her dominance. When she’s locked in, it shows how good she is.”

Joy Victor added 13 points, Casey Gorieu added 12, and Zera Lynn Panesa contributed 10 points for a quartet of Huskies in double-digits.

The Huskies will now advance to the Fifth place game at the tournament, facing The King’s University Eagles for the right to end their respective seasons with a victory.
