The Keyano Huskies Men’s Volleyball team served up another straight-sets victory Saturday at the Syncrude Sport and Wellness Centre in Fort McMurray, Alta., topping the University of Alberta – Augustana Vikings (26-24, 25-12, 25-15).

Facing off against a winless opponent in the Vikings, the Huskies were able to keep their focus enough in the first set to win a tight set before decidedly taking the final two sets.

“Our goal was to win this weekend, but we have a bigger goal at the end of the season; provincials at home,” Cameron Visscher said following Saturday’s win. “We’ve been talking about it all year.

“This was the weekend to just work on what we needed to and try to get better for that.”

Trey Weinmeier led the Huskies with 10 kills, one ahead of teammate Athus Silva and his nine kills. Joao Cunha finished with eight kills to round out the top offensive trio. They also combined for 12 of the Huskies’ 25 digs, five of 12 service aces, and five of the team’s nine blocks, with Silva recording three of them on his own.

The match closed out a 5-1 January for the Huskies in regular season play, also improving the Huskies’ home record to 5-2 on the season.

With four games left, the Huskies have a massive opportunity ahead of them to claim the top spot in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference’s (ACAC) North Division. That opportunity kicks into high gear with a weekend date in Edmonton against The King’s University Eagles, who, like the Huskies, are 11-4 with four games remaining in their regular season schedule.

“It all starts Monday at practice,” Visscher added. “We’ve got to come ready to go and just because we won this weekend doesn’t mean anything for next [weekend].”

The Huskies and Eagles are scheduled for an 8:00 p.m. first serve on Friday, February 3 followed by a 3:00 p.m. scheduled start on Saturday, February 4.
