With a return to competition against their own division, the Keyano Huskies Men’s Volleyball team took care of business this past weekend, sweeping both games against the Concordia Thunder in Edmonton.

Increasing their winning streak to three games, the Huskies continued their pursuit of first place in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference’s (ACAC) North Division.

“Anytime you can win six straight [sets] or three-out-of-three, is good in our game,” Head Coach Keegan Kuhr said. “I was happy with the result. I was happy with how we played, how we competed.

“Going on the road and getting two wins is overall a great weekend.”

In Friday’s straight-sets victory (25-19, 25-21, 25-20), Radek Brzozowski led the visiting Huskies win nine kills, adding seven digs to lead his side in both categories. He also added one block.

Five blocks from Athus Silva and 21 assists from Nikola Sreckovic also helped pace them to the victory. Silva contributed seven kills in addition to his strong block game while Cameron Visscher added five kills and five digs.

Saturday, it was more of the same in a three-set sweep (25-13, 25-20, 25-19). Trey Weinmeier edged out Brzozowski and Silva with a team-leading six kills while the latter two each had five. Preston Yole led the team with four blocks.

Silva edged out Weinmeier for the aces lead in the match with a four-to-three margin. Seven of the 10 Huskies to play in the game recorded at least three digs in the match while Weinmeier and Brzozowski each had a pair of blocks to join Yole and Silva in the multi-block club for the day.

With the pair of wins, the Huskies have further strengthened their case for the top spot in the ACAC’s North Division, sitting two points back of the NAIT Ooks with three games in-hand.

“That’s exactly what we talked about,” Kuhr said in relation to the standings battle. “We know that Concordia, regardless of their record, they’re still competitive enough and they pushed us a few sets there. We knew we needed to play our game and we knew if we did that we could find some success.

“It wasn’t really necessarily about Concordia, it was about chasing down first place in the North and that’s something that we have our eye on here as we head into the home stretch.”

They'll have to remain sharp this coming weekend as they return home to host the 0-13 University of Alberta – Augustana Vikings for a pair of games.

The Vikings won’t be an opponent they’ll take lightly either, following a five-set battle the two teams had in Fort McMurray last season and Huskies Men’s Volleyball alumni Devin Varga, head coach of the Vikings, looking to score an important win against his former side.

First serve on Friday is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. with a 3:00 p.m. first serve scheduled Saturday at the Syncrude Sport and Wellness Centre.
