It wasn’t the start to 2023 the Keyano Huskies Men’s Volleyball team imagined as they fell in straight sets (20-25, 21-25, 26-28) to the Lethbridge College Kodiaks Friday night in southern Alberta.

“I’m going to take blame on not preparing the guys,” Head Coach Keegan Kuhr said. “I thought we had a good week of practice. Maybe I could have done a few things here and there, but it just didn’t go our way. We fought it tonight. I really couldn’t get guys to turn it around and bring it back.

“We had that close third set and honestly it was a playoff atmosphere. Lethbridge is a good team and we didn’t play together.”

Trey Weinmeier had 10 kills to lead the visiting Huskies with teammate Radek Brzozowski close behind at nine kills. Joao Cunha rounded out the top trio for the Huskies with eight kills.

Nikola Sreckovic recorded 20 assists to surpass the 1,500-assist mark for his Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) career. He also led his side with nine digs in Friday’s matchup.

Kuhr added he wanted his side to learn from Friday’s loss, considering that a more important matchup could be taking place down the road in ACAC Men’s Volleyball Championships on the Huskies home court in late February.

“Depending on how we do here, we don’t have the best record,” Kuhr said. “There’s lots of teams that are close to us. I told the guys, this could be a quarterfinal, semi-final matchup.

“We don’t want to have the same result so hopefully we can make those changes.”

The Huskies are back in action Saturday night in Calgary, Alta., challenging the 7-6 Ambrose University Lions. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
