James Bartha scored twice and the Keyano Huskies Men’s Soccer team recorded a 3-1 victory against the visiting Concordia Thunder Saturday afternoon at Shell Place.

It marked back-to-back wins for the first time in the 2023 outdoor season for the Men and an important three points in the standings.

I think the men played a phenomenal first half and then we definitely left some goals out on the field there,” Head Coach Niels Slotboom said. “Second half, decent start, but then again we dropped off a little bit and allowed Concordia to get some momentum and maybe get a sense there was something in it for them.

“James put a good goal away and that kind of seals it up for us. It’s a good three points.”

Bartha began the scoring in the sixth minute as he capitalized off a forced turnover by the Huskies. With the Thunder’s clear attempt knocked down, the ball pinballed and was passed to Tano Torchia, who rushed in with a shot on net that was deflected but bounced towards the net, where Bartha tucked it away for the game’s opening goal.

The next goal didn’t come until the 55th minute, when William Ly’s free kick went uncontested by the goalkeeper, with Ly beating him to the near side of the net.

Julian Muguia-Scott brought the Thunder back to within a goal in the 76th minute of play, but another strike from Bartha, his 19th in his regular season career with the Huskies, kept the game out of reach.

Slotboom was encouraged by the performance of the 2022 ACAC Rookie of the Year, but noted there was still more to add on his game.

“He scores goals for sure, but he’s leaving a lot out there,” Slotboom added. “That’s what I told him at the end of the game. Sometimes we’ve got to get the easy ones and maybe miss some of those hard ones.

“He knows, he’s eager, and I’m sure he’ll keep putting them in the back of the net.”
