The Keyano Huskies Men’s Futsal team had their 2022 season cut short last weekend as they fell in their final two games of the regular season.

Last Saturday in Lac La Biche, the Huskies fell to the Portage College Voyageurs by a 5-2 score before closing out play with a 4-2 loss to the Lakeland Rustlers.

“[It was] better than the weekend before so definitely some improvement in the areas that we wanted to see improvement on, but obviously not the results that we wanted,” Head Coach Niels Slotboom said. “We played better, but definitely not good enough and definitely not what we’re capable of.

“Frustrating, but promising to see some upside, some return of what we were looking for. It was just too little too late.”

Karl Tronche and Tom Wessel scored against the Voyageurs while Wessel’s second of the day and a strike from Austin Kronebusch featured in the loss to the Rustlers.

With a pair of losses from their opening weekend, qualifying for the playoffs was already a tall order. Slotboom noted he saw improvement, but it didn’t translate onto the scoresheet.

“Our work rate and our compete rate was a lot higher where it needed to be,” Slotboom continued. “Structurally and positionally that we’ve worked on, we started to see it the way that we’ve trained.

“Again, the execution simply wasn’t at a high enough level.”

The losses lead the Men’s Soccer and Futsal program into an offseason that will spark some change within the program as Slotboom continues to put his stamp on the team.

“As soon as one season is done, be that soccer or futsal, you start working towards the next one. The team is definitely looking different already than the first semester.

“We’ve got quite a few new recruits already locked up so we’re looking at the pieces that we need and we piece it all together.”
