Men's Basketball Huskies topped in quarter-final by Dynamiques de Brebeuf
It was always going to be a challenge to repeat as national champion.
Wednesday, the Keyano Huskies Men’s Basketball team had those repeat hopes ended by the Dynamiques de Brebeuf with an 86-55 result in the quarter-finals of the 2025 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Men’s Basketball Championship in Montreal, Que.
“We didn’t get off to a good start, which has been the theme for the last few games,” Head Coach Jeremy Wielenga said. “They’re a very talented team and they made us pay for our mistakes.
“Before you know it, it was a little too big of a hole to come back from tonight. Credit to them, they’re a very good team.”
Even with a 26-16 first-quarter score in favour of the Réseau du Sport Étudiant du Québec (RSEQ) Champions, the Huskies opened the second quarter with back-to-back three-points shots from Keenan Miller and Omeechi Williams to pull the Huskies within four.
That refocused the Dynamiques, who outscored the Huskies 20-3 in the rest of the quarter to take a 21-point lead at the half.
While there wasn’t a huge disparity in turnovers, with the Huskies committing 17 to the Dynamiques’ 14, the points the RSEQ champs were able to earn from those opportunities came back to hurt the Huskies, who needed breaks to go their way that didn’t througohut the rest of the game.
“They sped us up and they did a really good job plugging the paint,” Wielenga continued. “We didn’t hit shots early so we stopped moving the ball a bit.
"That even led to not just turnovers, but bad shots that are almost like turnovers because they pushed the ball the other way and got shots. It really did end up hurting us in the end.”
The Huskies final shooting percentage from the field 32.3% (20-for-62) didn’t help their case either, with just six three-point shots made during the course of the game.
A 26-10 difference in free throw chances also put the Huskies on the disadvantage, with the Dynamiques winning that battle by a 17-9 score by the end of the game. A 17-7 advantage in second-chance points and 27-11 advantage in bench points for the Dynamiques also worked against the Huskies.
Omeechi Williams led the Huskies with 14 points, two ahead of Keenen Caribou’s 12 and four ahead of Keenan Miller’s 10, the lone Huskies in double digits on the day.
Huskies shift focus to Bronze Medal bracket
With the Huskies unable to earn first or second at this week’s tournament, the focus now shifts to trying to earn a CCAA Bronze Medal. That process starts with a quarter-final matchup against the University of New Brunswick Saint John Seawolves, who lost in the opening quarter-final matchup to the Durham College Lords by a 61-50 score.
“They had a real good game plan and executed well against Durham, who seem to be very well-coached. It’s going to be a real tough game tomorrow. We’ve got to dig deep and find a way to show up and compete.
Tip-off for Thursday’s game is scheduled for 1:00pm ET/11:00am MT and is available on CCAAlive.ca.
