While the wins matter at all points in the year, improving as part of the journey matters just as much for the Keyano Huskies Men’s Basketball team.

Without exuding too much hubris, the squad corrected a wrong as part of a weekend sweep against the Northwestern Polytechnic Wolves.

“It was great to get two wins,” Head Coach Jeremy Wielenga said of his squad, who officially clinched a playoff spot with the win. “I think that was the goal of the weekend and I thought we played really well [Saturday]. We’re onto the next one.”

In a 73-56 win Friday, the Huskies had established a 28-point lead by the end of the third quarter, before the team appeared to take their foot off the gas in the fourth quarter, getting outscored 20-9 in the final frame to close the gap to 17.

Evan Meyer led the Huskies with 16 points while DJ Haynes’ 14-point game and 11 from Omeechi Williams were the only others in double-digits.

Saturday’s 96-55 victory was much more a return to complete form for the Huskies, who were led by 22 points from Meyer while Williams added 16, Keenan Miller add 12, and Efosa Omorogbe led all players off the bench with 11 points.

“I thought we handled it better today,” Wielenga said of working with the lead Saturday. “I don’t think yesterday in the fourth quarter we played very well. It left a little bit of a bad taste in our mouth going into Saturday.

“I thought we handled those stretches well today.”

The Wolves won a 19-18 second quarter, but it couldn’t stop the Huskies, who bolted out to a 13-0 lead and led 31-10 after the first quarter.

The Huskies won a 30-17 third quarter and kept their foot on the gas in a 17-9 fourth quarter. The Huskies also made 10 three-points shots in a game for the second time on the weekend and fifth time this year.

Having all-but clinch the top seed in the ACAC’s North Division, the Huskies will have a bye week before facing off against the SAIT Trojans and St. Mary’s University Lightning in southern Alberta from February 9-10.
