Sean-Michael Clancey of the Keyano Huskies is the 2023 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Men’s Basketball Player of the Year.

In addition, Clancey is one of 13 players who has been named 2023 CCAA Men’s Basketball All-Canadians.

The student-athletes were honoured at the 2023 CCAA Men’s Basketball National Championship, hosted by the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) in Calgary, AB.

“Sean is a gifted athlete who can both facilitate for his teammates or create his own shot when the team needs it most,” said Randy Stewart, ACAC Men’s Basketball Convenor. “His experience and calm demeanor during high-pressure situations make him one of the best players in the league.”

Clancey, a fifth-year guard, led the Huskies to a perfect 20-0 regular season record and first-place finish in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) North Division. Keyano was ranked No. 2 in the CCAA for most of the season.

The three-time CCAA All-Canadian was the ACAC North Division scoring champion for the third straight season. He averaged 23.4 points per game and picked up 136 rebounds, 94 assists and 60 steals.

While providing electrifying skills on the court, Clancey has been committed to finishing his degree and studies at Keyano College.

His drive to win is unmatched, though he also understands the need to balance that with mutual respect for his opponents. In addition, his coachable and fun-loving attitude has spread to other student-athletes throughout the Huskies’ program.

Clancey is a PEAK (Passion, Excellence, Attitude, Knowledge) Program volunteer coach, volunteered at the Wood Buffalo 2023 Arctic Winter Games, was a ‘Junior Huskies’ camp coach, and also volunteered at the Keyano College Gala and other fundraising events.

“Sean is a very special player and even better person off the floor,” said Jeremy Wielenga, Head Coach of Keyano Huskies. “We are very grateful for everything he has done for our program on and off the floor and he is very deserving of this honour.”

The CCAA Men’s Basketball Player of the Year receives a customized ring provided by Jostens Canada, the Official Ring Supplier of the CCAA.

Clancey is the second student-athlete from Keyano College Huskies Athletics to be recognized as CCAA Player of the Year in their respective sport following Men's Volleyball student-athlete Alwyn Piche in the 2008-09 season.
