Women's Soccer Huskies moved to outside of playoff picture entering final weekend
After the second-to-last weekend of the regular season, the Keyano Huskies Women’s Soccer team are now on the outside looking in for the playoff picture in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference.
A 2-0 win Saturday against The King’s University Eagles added to the expected results of those within the top three of the division, but it was their battle against the division-leading Concordia Thunder Sunday, a 2-1 loss, that may have sealed their fate permanently.
“There’s always positives that you take out of every weekend and you build off of, which we were still able to do,” Head Coach Tiffany Fontaine said. “Very disappointing to continue to have extremely low-scoring games, low shots on goal percentage wise against us.
“Stats are stats; unfortunately they haven’t been falling for us.”
Goals from Norah Horsley, her first in the ACAC, and Nathalie Andersson featured in Saturday’s win. Gaelyn Verdin picked up the win and the shutout. Sunday, Anke Wijnbergen had the lone goal in the loss.
Now tied in points with the NAIT Ooks, the Huskies are on the outside of the playoff picture due to the Ooks holding the tiebreaker thanks to that 1-0 result from a few weekends ago. Though the top three teams in each division normally qualify under the current format, the third-place spot would be filled by the host Northwestern Polytechnic Wolves.
That leaves the Huskies with one final weekend to make things as hard as possible on the Ooks in their bid to qualify, with both teams having two games remaining.
With the Huskies facing the Eagles Friday and Portage College Voyageurs Sunday, two wins by the Huskies and any combination of draws or losses by the Ooks would put last year’s silver medalists back in the playoffs.
“You want personal growth and you want continuous improvement in any aspect, especially in your game,” Fontaine added. “That’s the focus right now; just to keep showcasing that we are one of the tops in our zone in our region in the North.
“We still want to go down known for that we were a sliver away from making it.”
The Huskies and Eagles clash Friday at 2:30pm in Edmonton followed by a 12:00pm start against the Voyageurs in Lac La Biche.
