Jacobson, Cunha named All In Sports Den Keyano Huskies Athletes of the Week
Keyano College Huskies Athletics announced today that Women's Volleyball student-athlete Drew Jacboson (Wakaw, Sask.) and Men's Volleyball student-athlete João Cunha (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) have been recognized as the All In Sports Den Keyano Huskies Athletes of the Week for the week ending Sunday, January 26, 2025.
Cunha recorded 25 kills, six digs, and four aces as the Men’s Volleyball Huskies clinched a spot in the 2025 Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Men’s Volleyball Championship with two weekend wins in Lloydminster, Alta. He recorded the 1000th kill of his post-secondary career in Saturday’s 3-0 win against the Lakeland Rustlers after a 14-kill performance in Friday’s four-set win.
“It just shows how hard the guy works day in and day out,” Kuhr said of Cunha. “He’s a true professional on and off the court. He cares not only about our team, but about his work ethic and he just tries do everything he can for our team.
“He’s been a huge piece of our program.”
Cunha also added six digs and four aces in the weekend wins.
The fifth-year outside hitter is at the forefront of the Huskies’ attack as they look to claim the top spot in the ACAC’s North Division for a second-straight season.
Cunha’s 164 kills this season rank fourth in the entire conference, the same placing as his 3.57 kills per set. For his ACAC career, Cunha has recorded 867 kills in 239 sets, averaging out to 3.63 kills per set.
Jacobson continued to set a defensive example for the Women’s Volleyball Huskies, compiling 11 digs and receiving 42 serves over the weekend with just nine errors to her name.
“She stepped up big,” Head Coach Tommy Sloan said. “Offensively, Lakeland is just a force so we need our defenders, our libero, to step up and make some big plays.
“She made some huge digs for us and really settled us down in the back row. She’s done good all year.”
Jacobson’s 11 digs over the weekend boosted her to 161 on the year, ranking second in the entire conference.
The Huskies return home to the volleyball court when they host the University of Alberta – Augustana Vikings at the Syncrude Sport & Wellness Centre on Friday, February 7 and Saturday, February 8. Frist serve is at 6:00pm Friday and 1:00pm Saturday.
