Keyano College Huskies Athletics announced today that Women's Soccer student-athlete Anke Wijnbergen (Leeuwarden, The Netherlands) and Men's Soccer student-athlete Cleisson Anklam (São Luiz Gonzaga, Brazil) have been recognized as the All In Sports Den Keyano Huskies Athletes of the Week for the week ending Sunday, September 24, 2023.

The pair helped the Huskies to two victories Sunday in Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) action as the Huskies took down the NAIT Ooks on the soccer pitch.

Wijnbergen scored the first goal of her ACAC career in Sunday's 5-1 victory. A beautiful shot from just outside the box, the Netherlands product sailed the ball into the top corner of the net to put her side up 3-1 just minutes into the second half.

"She’s been very solid and every single game we see improvement," Head Coach Niels Slotboom said. "It’s a little bit of a different way of playing here in comparison with the Netherlands where she’s from; a different type of game and different things are asked of the positions that she plays.

"She had some setbacks with an injury, she’s coming back from that and this weekend showed that she’s going to be a very important player for us that’s going to be impactful in every single scenario."

On the Men's side of the ball, Anklam scored the game-winning goal and picked up Player of the Game honours in Sunday's 2-0 victory against the Ooks. Anklam took a free kick for the Huskies in the fifth minute of action and made no mistake, beating the keeper to Anklam's right.

"He’s really taken on a full leadership, not just off the field, which he’s done for quite a long time, but you can now see on the field as well," Slotboom said. "He’s one of the key players, one of the top players on our team and it’s starting to come together. He’s starting to really see the game and really find his way within it."

Anklam also played a key role defensively, clearing the ball out of the box after a saved penalty kick in the later stages of the second half that helped keep the two-goal lead in tact.

The Huskies return to action this weekend when they host the Concordia Thunder at Shell Place for a pair of games each. The Women will play at 2:00 p.m. Saturday and 12:00 p.m. Sunday with the Men's game scheduled for 4:00 p.m. Saturday and 2:00 p.m. Sunday.
