Keyano College Huskies Athletics announced today that Women's Soccer student-athlete Marissa Mestre (Hamilton, Ontario) and Men's Soccer student-athlete Hafid Arellano (Lima, Peru) have been recognized as the All In Sports Den Keyano Huskies Athletes of the Week for the week ending Sunday, September 17, 2023.
Mestre and Arellano each played big offensive roles for their sides in home wins in Sunday's action against the Portage College Voyageurs. The duo each scored hat tricks as the Women claimed a 7-0 win and the Men earned a 8-0 victory.
“It’s nice to see [Marissa] being rewarded with some good service from the girls and being able to finish," Head Coach Niels Slotboom said. "Those were three very nice goals she scored.”
As the Women's Soccer Huskies moved to 3-0-0 on the season, Mestre played a key role with the second, fourth, and fifth goals of the game for the Huskies. Mestre's performance placed her in a tie for seventh in Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Women's Soccer scoring to date, four off the leader. Mestre is tied for the lead in North Division scoring, tied at three with Vanessa Pietramala from the Concordia Thunder.
For her ACAC career, the Nursing student in her third year of eligiblity has recorded eight goals and five assists in 21 ACAC Regular Season games.
On the Men's side, Arellano notched a natural hat trick after scoring the second, third, and fourth goals of the aformentioned 8-0 win. He also assisted on the game's opening goal.
“If he gets into the game, he’s good at getting into the danger positions and his finishing is one of the best in the league,” Slotboom said of Arellano. “If we can get him into those spots and find him, he’s going to put them into the back of the net and that’s exactly what we saw today.”
Securing the first win of the season for the Men's Soccer Huskies, Arellano has contirbuted to 40 percent of his team's goals for the 2023 outdoor season.
For his ACAC career to date, the second year Business Management student has recorded nine goals and six assists in 12 ACAC Regular Season games.
