The International Cricket Council’s (ICC) Cricket World Cup Challenge League wrapped up Tuesday in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia with Keyano Huskies student-athlete Aaron Johnson helping Canada score a win over host Malaysia to top Group A.

With a strike rate of 83.33 percent, Johnson batted in 10 of Canada’s 240 runs in the match, scoring one of their 17 boundaries in the match. Batting first, Canada set the target of 240 for eight. Malysia could only then muster 51 runs.

It’s been an exciting month for Johnson, who made his List A debut with Canada on December 4 in a match against Qatar. List A is a designation given to top-tier matches in test cricket.

During this most recent edition of group play, Canada also scored victories against Singapore and Denmark. Their game against Vanuatu was abandoned due to rain.

Canada went 13-1-0-1 in the league play that progresses teams in the qualification process for the 2023 Cricket World Cup, scheduled to begin in India next October.

Part of a new pathway for nations to qualify for the Cricket World Cup, Canada and Jersey will join the four lowest-ranked teams from the ICC Cricket World Cup League 2 in the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier Play-off, which is set to be played in March and April of 2023.
