Keyano Huskies Women’s Cricket student-athletes will make history this week as they take to the pitch at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England.

The quartet of Shai Carrington, Shaunte Carrington, Tiffany Thorpe, and Aaliyah Williams were selected to represent Barbados at the quadrennial games when they begin on Thursday, July 28. The games run through Monday, August 8.

Competition for the sport at the games will follow the Twenty20 format and will be a women’s only tournament. Also competing will be Australia, host England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, and Sri Lanka.

The first iteration of the Commonwealth Games took place in 1930 and were hosted by Hamilton, Ont.

With the inclusion of Women’s Cricket, it will mark just the second time the sport has been contested at the games, following the 1998 games in Malaysia where they held a competition for the men. South Africa claimed gold in that event with Australia and New Zealand earning the other spots on the podium.
Barbados is in Group A for the competition with Australia, India, and Pakistan. They’ll play their opening match on Friday, July 29 against Pakistan.

On Sunday, July 31, they’ll battle Australia and close out group play against India on Wednesday, August 3.
