Keyano College Huskies Athletics announced today that they’ll be hosting the 2023 Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Men’s and Women’s Futsal Championships.

The tournaments will run from Friday, March 10 to Sunday, March 12 and will take place at the Syncrude Sport & Wellness Centre.

"The futsal game is moving into the mainstream each year in Canada and the competition within the ACAC is a big part of that,” Director of Athletics & Recreation Jonathan Lambert said. “To be able to host the ACAC Men's and Women’s Futsal Championship tournaments is something we take pride in.”

The Keyano Huskies have a strong history in the sport of futsal. The Men’s Futsal Huskies have won a conference-leading six ACAC Futsal Championships, including a four-peat from 2013 to 2016 and back-to-back titles in 2018 and 2019. They also earned the silver medal in 2017 and a bronze in 2012.

“We’re very fortunate to be able to host the 2023 ACAC Futsal Championships, not just for Keyano College and our student-athletes, but for the soccer community in Fort McMurray as a whole,” said Men’s and Women’s Futsal Head Coach Niels Slotboom. “This will be a unique opportunity for them to see the sport at the highest collegiate level and instill further passion in the sport.”

For the Women’s Futsal Huskies, they’ve earned silver medals in 2022 and 2016 in addition to bronze medals in three-straight seasons between 2012 and 2014.

“After such a successful 2022 campaign for our Women's Futsal Huskies, we're excited to be hosting the championships in mid-March 2023,” Lambert continued. “We hope the community comes out to cheer on our Huskies all weekend long."

The SAIT Trojans are the defending ACAC Champions in both Men’s and Women’s Futsal.
