The Keyano Huskies Women’s Soccer team rolled to their third home victory of the 2022 season Saturday at Shell Place, topping the visiting Portage College Voyageurs 4-0 to claim the win in the first half of the season series.

“It’s a good three points,” Head Coach Niels Slotboom said of the win. “There’s lots of things in there that we want to do better.

“The girls played well, didn’t give up a whole lot of chances on the other side so overall a good win.”

Felicia Rodney scored the 43rd and 44th goals of her Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) career, moving her into a tie for sixth all-time among ACAC Women's Soccer goal scorers.

The scoring began Saturday courtesy of Marissa Mestre, who struck in the 25th minute of the game, followed by Rodney's first of the match in the 39th minute.

“The focus is there, I don’t think the energy levels were there when we needed it,” Slotboom added in his assessment of the game. “That’s something that the girls have got to really work on at the start of the game and make sure that we’re there throughout the game.

“There’s other things that we saw in there that were, so we work towards the next set of games.”

Beginning the second half, Sophie Griffiths potted her third goal of the season in the 48th minute to make it a 3-0 game before Rodney closed out the scoring in the 65th minute.

Rookie Luca Van Rijn assisted on Mestre's opening goal, factoring into a goal on the scoresheet for the first time in her young ACAC career. Madison Tyson, who earned player of the game honours for her side, saw the key to Saturday’s win in winning the battle with the ball in the air.

“I thought we had some slow periods, but we picked it up when we needed to and we scored when we had the opportunities,” Tyson said. “Getting first to the ball was big as a team because, especially against Concordia, we didn’t do that and that’s partially why we lost.”

Goalkeeper Anastacia Lalonde earned her second clean sheet of the season. Chloe Gauthier-Schaub earned Player of the Game honours for the visiting Voyageurs.

The win continued the Huskies’ run of home wins to six-straight games dating back to last season. Taking advantage of their home dates, the Huskies drew a strong crowd and were feeling it on the field.

“It feels really good, especially when people come out to support us and we’re putting on a show a little bit,” Tyson said. “I enjoy it; I like being at home and winning obviously.”

The early wins for the now 4-1-0 Huskies briefly put them in first place in the ACAC North Division, though they ultimately finished the weekend in second place. Regardless, the team has put themselves in a good spot nearing the halfway point of their regular season.

“We need to make sure that this is a place where it’s really tough to play and we get our points here,” Slotboom added of the home pitch success. “We’ve done that so far, so we’ve got to make sure that we continue that on in the final home stretch as well.”

With this year’s schedule seeing the Huskies play five home games to seven road games, the team has one more final home weekend, hosting the NAIT Ooks, on October 15 and 16 at Shell Place.

This weekend, the Huskies will roll along to Edmonton, challenging the Thunder and The King’s University Eagles to conclude the regular season series with each school. Saturday’s matchup with the Thunder is at 3:45 p.m. followed by a 2:00 p.m. date against the Eagles Sunday.
