Local Sports Teams

The Keyano Huskies are proud to share the sports landscape in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo with several other sports teams that represent the region in provincial-level competition.

Fort McMurray Oil Barons

Beginning play for the 1981-82 season in the Alberta Junior Hockey League, the Fort McMurray Oil Barons have established a strong tradition of success. A three-time AJHL Champion (1997, 2000, 2006), the Oil Barons claimed the 2000 Royal Bank Cup in front of the home crowd. Individually, the Oil Barons have established a pipeline of talent to professional hockey, developing the likes of Colton Parayko, Chris Phillips, Scottie Upshall, and Harry York. The Oil Barons play their home games out of Centerfire Place.

Fort McMurray Giants

Beginning play for the 2016 season in the Western Canadian Baseball League, the Fort McMurray Giants offer a premier summer home for collegiate baseball players to further develop their game. The team has also served as a home to local baseball players pursuing their collegiate baseball dreams. One of the team's early stars, Justin Bridgman, was drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays in 2017. The Giants play their home games at Shell Place.

Fort McMurray Knights

Founded in 1972, the Fort McMurray Knights Rugby Football Club has brought the internationally-acclaimed sport to the local community for nearly half a century. Fielding both men's and women's teams in the Edmonton Rugby Union, the club also provides a mini rugby program to enrich the future growth of the sport. Canadian national team member Maria Samson briefly played with the Knights.

Fort McMurray Monarchs

The Fort McMurray Monarchs began play in the Alberta Football League for the 2014 season, bringing amateur Canadian adult football to northern Alberta. The team has quickly established a foundation of success, winning the AFL Championship in 2015 and 2016. On their home field in 2016, the Monarchs defeated the GTA All-Stars to claim their first and only Canadian Major Football League title. The team has been previously quarterbacked by Will Arndt, who went on to sign with the Canadian Football League's Ottawa REDBLACKS, appearing in 18 games during the 2019 CFL season. Arndt has since joined the B.C. Lions organization. The Monarchs play their home games at Shell Place.
