Marlo Rathmann, a dedicated third-year Bachelor of Arts student at Keyano College and the Huskies Women’s Volleyball team, has been awarded the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association's (CCAA) Torchbearer Scholarship for her unwavering commitment to serving her community through volunteer advocacy.

Marlo's remarkable journey of service began with her involvement in Victim Services, a community program operating alongside the RCMP in Fort McMurray. With a minimum dedication of 48 hours per month, Marlo volunteers tirelessly to assist victims of crime and trauma during their times of crisis. Her availability for on-call duty, spanning evenings, weekends, and even 24/7 coverage, reflects her deep sense of responsibility toward ensuring that individuals facing emergencies receive immediate support and access to essential resources.

"For me volunteering was always a privilege," Rathmann said. "I grew up in a home where my mother emphasized that if you have anything to give to those in your community, you should.

“I am passionate about the work Victim Services does. Being recognized for my community service isn't so much about me personally. Though I am so proud to have been selected, it provides a platform to spread further awareness of this valuable resource, available across Alberta and much of Canada, to victims of crime and trauma."

Marlo's commitment to supporting individuals through their darkest moments has been transformative. With a keen focus on empowering victims, especially those affected by domestic violence, she has played a pivotal role in providing the necessary support for them to break free from harmful situations.

"Marlo has proven herself reliable, responsible, and trustworthy in the short time she has volunteered with our organization”, said Melanie Head, Community Policing Coordinator. “She goes above and beyond when volunteering, taking on more shifts than required all while still attending school."

Marlo's selfless dedication to helping others find strength and hope in times of crisis exemplifies the spirit of the Torchbearer Scholarship. Her commitment to advocating for victims and empowering them to navigate their paths towards healing and justice serves as an inspiration to her peers and community members alike.
